Psychological Support for the First Responder Family

Which of these are true? Mental health & PTSD education can benefit the Family of First Responders because it:

Do you have a family support plan for emergencies? What would your children do in a crisis, either physical or mental health crisis?

Establish a list of response/emergency contacts for emergency and/or a PTSD crisis event that all the family can understand and action.

Have a family meeting to discuss emergencies: fire, flood, cancer, to mental health & PTSD. Children cope better if they understand. Teach them to cope and they will be more resilient in a crisis.

The Drama Triangle - toxic relationships may at times by triggered by PTSD or mental health issues.

Encourage an empowering relationship - this relationship can support the first responder and their partner through the PTSD, mental health issues

How to combat the effect of PTSD on your family Explain mental health and PTSD to your teenage children; Check in with your younger children; check they are all ok; Look for similar symptoms in your children; and Share how you are managing PTSD.

Impact on children Withdrawal; Feeling physically sick, weak or in pain; Thought problems; Delinquent and aggressive behaviour Anxiety/depression; Attention deficit; Problems in social relations; Internalization

Encourage quality time as a family. This helps build a safe attachment (bond) with your children and gives balance to the PTSD symptoms. Fun times, quality time, personal time with your children. Eat together and share stories Exercise together Adventure together
