The Role of Security Officers Course - Lesson Excerpt

A Security Officer's Personality and Appearance

A Security Officer's Character and Attitude To be a great security officer, you must be honest, disciplined, and loyal. You must not engage in unlawful activity, such as accepting bribes, and also always be **alert **for possible threats. Consistency is another trait you must possess. Keep doing routine tasks even when no one is around, despite their repetitive nature. Learn to handle tense situations calmly and diffuse any tension between those involved. If you are asked the same question repeatedly, do not give a curt response or raise your voice. Do not use abusive or inappropriate words when dealing with difficult customers or visitors. Finally, you must be genuinely interested in your job. Being interested in what you do as a security officer makes the work more pleasant.

A Security Officer's Appearance

Now, you look in your closet and start preparing your outfit.

Remember, your appearance is a reflection of the company.

Always be clean and well-dressed. Avoid wearing stained or heavily creased clothes.

Make the effort to look good. This makes a great impression on the people you encounter.

Being well-dressed would also make you more confident and improve your disposition at work.

You also need to remember to observe proper hygiene. Be careful not to stain your clothes when eating your lunch or drinking coffee at work.

Why should you stay clean and well-dressed at work?

A Security Officer's Directives

In this lesson, you'll understand the main instructions a security officer must follow.

A Security Officer's Directives

DETER To deter is to stop

Deterrence is the second directive. It means to prevent.

To deter incidents, you must always be alert and have a good vantage point to watch over your surroundings.

Strictly patrol the areas assigned to you and take note of any and all suspicious activity.

Avoid falling into a pattern or routine at work. Doing so will allow instigators to predict your actions and strike when you least expect.

Always discover new ways to make the tasks you do more interesting so you can stay inspired at work.

The Duties of a Security Officer

In this lesson, we'll talk about your tasks as a security officer.

The Role of Security Officers Course - Lesson Excerpt

General Tasks of a Security Officer

Aside from your primary duty, you also have to do other general tasks.

Accompaniment As a security officer, you may be assigned to provide protection to important people during formal events or parties.

** Alarm response** and ** Crime Prevention** When you're on duty, you must always be ready to handle emergencies and prevent the occurrence of crime.

Constant Patrol As a security officer, you must always watch over the area assigned to you. You may make use of transportation, your own feet, or even closed-circuit monitoring systems to do so.

Traffic Control and Access Control You may direct traffic flow to avoid congestion within the area assigned to you. You may also need to secure areas and keep them off limits.

Basic Investigations You may also be asked to perform basic investigations for crimes or incidents because you keep a record of who may be involved, what and where incidents happen, among others.

Others Other tasks that were not mentioned may also be assigned to you whenever needed.

Which of the following is not a task you need to do as a security officer?

The Responsibilities of a Security Officer

The Role of Security Officers Course - Lesson Excerpt

The Responsibilities of a Security Officer

Fires and Explosions, Terrorism, and Bomb threats These are very dangerous situations. Though they are usually handled by police officers, you should also detect, deter, and report them whenever necessary.

Civil Disturbances As part of crowd control, you may also seize control of civil disturbances such as strikes, riots, and demonstrations.

Accidents Accidents can happen anytime, so you should offer help in case of accidents. As a security officer, you must stay alert to respond to accidents faster.

**Medical Emergencies ** You may also be a first responder to medical emergencies. Whenever medical emergencies occur within your area of assignment, you should extend help to the victim.
