Defensive Driving for Heavy Vehicles Course - Lesson Excerpt

It's in the nature of the transportation and logistics industry to be in a rush.

But, you should never let the pressure of tight deadline cause you to drive in a risky manner.

It is your responsibility to minimize risks and undertake essential safety practises in order to avoid accidents and dangerous situations on the road.

Aiming High One of the most important defensive driving strategies for truck drivers is to aim high. This means looking further down the road in front of you thank you might think. As you might know already, big and heavy vehicles take longer to stop than a car does. Aiming high helps you to anticipate situations where you might have to slow down or stop, and will help you do avoid high risk situations.

Defensive Driving for Small Vehicle Drivers This lesson will show you how to drive safely around bigger vehicles such as trucks.

You should be cautious when driving near trucks because they are bigger and heavier than normal cars.

This means that they take longer to slow down and stop.

Trucks are also long and higher off the ground, so drivers may have difficulty seeing you when you are too close to them and in their blindspot.

What do the red parts of this image represent?

Passing a truck can be difficult but there a few things you can do to make sure you pass by safely. Never stay on either side of a truck, the truck may not be able to see you alongside them. You should make sure there is enough clear space for you to move into and pass the truck. Once you move next to them, try to get past as quick as possible. Make sure your headlights are on so the driver can see you approaching, and turn on windshield wipers if it's raining.
