Markdown and Ed

Key Takeaway: Make text bold or italics and do lots of other fancy stuff.

All Ed templates allow for a high-level of customisation because all text inputs are converted from Markdown to HTML before being added your lessons. If you’re new to Markdown, it’s very simple to use and will often work without you even thinking about it!

Bold and italic emphasis

To italicise text, wrap it with either an asterisk or underscore.

This is *emphasized* _text_.

To make text bold, wrap it with either double asterisks or double underscores.

This is **bold** __text__.

Horizontal rules

You can create a horizontal rule <hr /> by placing 3 or more hyphens, asterisks, or underscores on a single line. You can also place spaces between them.

New Lines

Paragraphs

Placing an empty line in between other content will wrap the sections before and after in paragraph <p></p> tags.

This is my first paragraph.

This, however, is the second paragraph.

Line Breaks

To force a line return, place two empty spaces at the end of a line.

Headers

HTML headings are produced by placing a number of hashes before the header text corresponding to the level of heading desired (HTML offers six levels of headings from H1 to H6).

Lists

Creating simple lists is done by using plus, hyphens or asterisks as list markers. These list markers are interchangeable.

Blockquotes

To enclose a segment of text in blockquotes, one must prefix each written line with a greater-than sign.

> ### Blockquoted header
>
> This is blockquoted text.
>
> This is a second paragraph within the blockquote.

Code

Block

To specify an entire block of pre-formatted code, surround the block with three backtick quotes ` on either side. Ampersands and angle brackets will automatically be translated into HTML entities.

`function sayHello(to) { console.log("Hello " + to)};`

Inline

Inline code descriptions can be done via the use of the backtick quotes. Any ampersands and angle brackets will automatically be translated into HTML entities.

Markdown is a `<em>text-to-html</em>` conversion tool for writers.
