1. Use microlearning
Microlearning is the practice of breaking down information into small components so that learners don’t get overwhelmed with new information. It’s exploding in popularity in the eLearning world and should be a primary consideration for a new (or for augmenting an existing) LMS.
2. Go mobile
A mobile LMS is great for eLearning training. Most, if not all, employees will own a smartphone nowadays and they’ll happily interact with it all day long. Using mobile learning allows you to distribute eLearning courseware direct to learners’ pockets and for them to interact with it in their own time, without the mental barriers of utilising a work-related tool.
3. Use an LMS with Spaced Repetition built in
Distributed Practice is a highly effective form of eLearning. Using microlearning and mobile learning will help enable it due to the short, repeatable nature of lessons. However, using a dedicated spaced repetition feature within an LMS will be more effective as it remembers which answers a learner got right and can focus on content that a learner has struggled with by introducing it at increasing, scientifically-derived interval to secure knowledge retention.
4. Make eLearning interactivity with gamification
Learning works the best when it doesn’t feel like learning. Choosing A, B, C or D and clicking Next does not count. Use an LMS that makes choosing the answer an engaging, entertaining or even competitive process.
5. An Agile LMS is best
Courseware can take a very long time to create and regularly involves sending off to expensive third parties. Not surprisingly, it eLearning content in an LMS can date very quickly which lowers engagement and makes it hard to relate to.
