With new lessons added regularly, we are excited to announce another addition to EdApp’s groundbreaking editable Content Library: HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) training. Provided by our learning partners at Improvement Sciences, all HIPAA lessons can now be found in our editable Content Library.
What is HIPAA?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a set of rules and guidelines covered in five sections called Titles. Title I deals with health insurance coverage for those who change/lose their jobs. Title II covers health care fraud and abuse. It also sets out standards for eHealth records. Title III speaks to health insurance law and medical insurance deductions. Title IV deals with group health plans. Lastly, Title V is about company-owned life insurance policies.

Why was HIPAA originally created
Originally signed in 1996, HIPAA was mainly created to make sure that people who lose or change their jobs continue to have health care coverage. However, it moved on to combat waste, fraud, and abuse and to modernize the flow of healthcare information via electronic health records. This was done by defining a set of national standards for securing and protecting the personal medical records of patients.
Since its origin, the core HIPAA law has been modified and strengthened to improve its effectiveness. The Act includes significant penalties for violations, called “breaches.” The largest reported breach to date affected 79 million patient records and resulted in a 16 million dollar fine.
HIPAA in the Health Industry
HIPAA’s four main purposes are:
- Privacy of health information
- Security of electronic records
- Administrative simplification
- Insurance portability
Thanks to the contributions of Improvement Sciences, the EdApp platform now hosts the invaluable HIPAA content to help covered entities better educate their workforce on the risks and safeguards for protecting sensitive personal and health information.
Why is HIPAA different with EdApp?
EdApp’s approach to HIPAA training content respects the busy lives of today’s professionals and appreciates the need for content backed by learning science, which continuously aligns with the ethos of EdApp. The content also includes a high number of touchpoints at each step of the training, which provides more insight for administrators into what the learners are really understanding. Improvement Sciences, using the EdApp platform, has developed highly interactive courseware to maximise participation and improve retention of the material.
Consistent with its commitment to learning science-based approaches to training, Improvement Sciences encourages companies who deploy EdApp’s HIPAA courseware to enable Brain Boost: EdApp’s implementation of spaced repetition, a proven method for dramatically increasing retention. These frequent reminders mitigate the risk throughout the year until the next mandatory compliance training check-up is due. EdApp shares this notion and is equally dedicated to providing a continual resource to learners undertaking HIPAA training, ensuring that knowledge is retained by reiteration and practical applicability.
What does the HIPAA training cover?
Hosted within EdApp, the HIPAA training content teaches the most paramount skills for clear communication on regulations surrounding healthcare information. Specifically, the following objectives can be accessed within the HIPAA courseware:
- HIPAA Overview
- Information to Be Protected
- Privacy Rule
- Security Rule
- Breach Rule
- Threats and Remedies
- Best Practices
- Scenarios for practice
- Knowledge check and certificate of completion
EdApp’s mobile-first microlearning platform enables HIPAA training that is more engaging than traditional HIPAA courses. Information is better retained with microlearning through features found on the EdApp platform like spaced repetition to cement knowledge exposed to learners in their long-term memory. Additionally, each lesson can be completed in 10 minutes or less, respecting the working professional’s busy life.
